May Day Celebration Floral

May your days be beautiful like the buds of May 1.

On this first day of May, I thought I would do a short mixed media tutorial.  Showing the steps used in creating a fun floral.

Gathering up my supplies.  A metal stencil, and 8 x 10 canvas board, texture paste, matte medium and vintage music papers.  I also added a little crackle medium here and there, but very little crackling appeared.  Some showed up more during the last stages of the painting.

The board is gessoed with DecoArt Chalky Gesso, Beige.  Forming a suede-like finish on the canvas.
Tearing my papers and apply them to the Beige background.  Following with texture paste, a palette knife and a metal stencil.

Drawing the design onto the canvas and begin painting and adding in shadows with darkest tints of color.  Mixing Cadmium Red and Ultramarine Blue.

Add Whites and Greens to the floral areas.

Building color as you proceed.  Loosely apply background and foreground areas.  At this point, I just let go and had fun without any expectations of the out come.

Building up more contrast and highlights with a palette knife.

I added a little fallen flower to the left bottom to balance things out a bit.  Later, went back in and darkened the shadow underneath.

Love how all the textures worked together with the acrylic paints.  Even some of the crackling showed up at the end.

Happy May Day and happy painting!

It's only the beginning.

A fresh start, a clean slate, the start of a new journey.

"And suddenly you just know it's time to start something new and trust the magic of new
beginnings."

The possibilities and excitement of a new year filed with hope, resolutions and change.  I didn't make any resolutions this year, but I am looking forward to growth and change in my art career.

Dedicating myself to learning new techniques and moving away from my comfort zone.  As I write this, I remember when I first retired and decided to create art on a daily basis.  Buying my first journal and creating something (no matter how small) in it each day.  As the year progressed, so did my art.  Baby steps to new beginnings and trusting myself in the process.

Before I painted this watercolor, I painted the same still-life in acrylics on canvas. As the process began, it took on a direction of its own.  At one point, I was ready to just walk away and begin something new.  It didn't have the fluid quality that I was working towards.  Maybe because I kept looking at the acrylic painting instead of the still-life itself.  I felt it to be too tight and over worked.

There is always that stage in a painting where it can go either way, proceed or fail.  As I kept layering my colors, I had to trust myself and the process and move on from my frustration.  Deciding to add an oil overlay and taking it to another direction.

In the end, I was satisfied with the outcome and the finished piece.

Trust the magic of new beginnings and be brave enough to listen to your own heart.  There is something incredibly hopeful about a fresh start!

Wishing you a very happy new beginning!

Being More intentional

For the last month, I have dedicated my time to watercolor painting, seeking, learning and trying new techniques in this somewhat unforgiving medium.

Becoming more intentional, purposeful with each application.  Allowing the brush and paint to create each individual shape and  the shapes within.  Applying warm over cool, cool colors over warm.  The balance between the two.  Leaving some things undone and how much to render.  Allowing the viewer to fill in the blanks.

I have discovered new colors, creating more pigment and contrast within a painting.  Here are a few steps in progress of the above painting.  A just for fun watercolor study on 140 lb watercolor paper.

By seeking, learning and breaking things down, we can be more deliberate and intentional in what we create.

Until next time..

That's just the way it is:

Everything happens all at once or nothing happens at all.

We just returned from a wonderful and relaxing two week vacation on Navarre Beach, Florida.
The sunsets were spectacular each night and the days were filled with beach walks and plenty of sunshine.

While in Florida,  Somerset Apprentice, spring addition was released.  I knew my art work was chosen for the issue, but much to my surprise it also made the cover!  What an honor and feeling so blessed!

After coming home, I had to tweak a few things for my upcoming classes.

"If the only prayer you ever say is, "Thank You, that will be enough."  Eckhart Tolle.

It has been a good year and I appreciate all of you who have followed me  on this little art journey.

As some of you know, I have also been working in a Interior Design shop for many years.  As of the 23rd of this month, that chapter of my life will be closing.  I am officially retiring and will now be able to delve into my art more passionately.  Spending more hours in my studio, learning, experimenting and growing as an artist.

So, I want to thank you once again and to wish you all a ver Merry Christmas and the very best for 2018!  See you then.

Blessings:

"A work of art is above all an adventure of the mind."

My studio has been a little quiet of late, but things are beginning to fall into place and new adventures are on the horizon.
I love creating texture in my mixed media pieces.  Adding more depth and interest to a painting.  The above piece is a sample of what I will be teaching in Paint Your Heart and Soul 2018.  The link can be found over to the right of this page, under "Life is Art".

There are only three days left for the early bird pricing of $90, and if you do the math, it is only $2.00 per class.  22 talented artists and I am honored to be among them.  I will also be teaching a watercolor as well.  Easy bird pricing will end Monday, December 4.

In addition to this wonderful class, I will also be involved in the HeArtful Soul
artist Collective auction beginning December 4. This is just one of the pieces I will be auctioning off during our four day Holiday Auction.  Oil on canvas, "In The Mystery"  You can find us on facebook.
Heartful Soul Artist Collective monthly auction.  Again, sharing this time with gifted artists and friends.

A wonderful time to pick up some art for gift giving.
I hope to see you in class and don't forget to join the auction fun!

Love,
Ursula xo
